Overview
Mason Clark Associates (MCA) were contracted by Bourne Leisure to provide structural calculations for building regulation approval at Skegness Holiday Park which was undergoing redevelopment.
This is a leisure facility with Auditorium, Bar and Restaurant areas, together with a Swimming Pool complex and ancillary external facilities.
Challenges and Solutions
The redevelopment of Haven Holiday Park Skegness presented several engineering design challenges. There were no archive details available which showed the structural framework or foundations to any buildings on the site. MCA arranged for extensive opening up works to the existing buildings to confirm the format of the existing construction. Regarding foundations MCA arranged for a ground investigation exercise to confirm the existing format and also the nature and strength of the underlying subsoils.
The ground conditions comprised of soft clay strata. This complicated the foundation options available for the remodelled building. The proposals for the main building involved extensive alteration and demolitions of existing internal walls resulting in additional loads being imparted to the residual structure thereby increasing load on existing foundations. Due to the poor ground conventional underpinning techniques were unsuitable, mini piled designs were considered expensive and therefore several non-conventional reinforced concrete solutions were adopted.
In The Auditorium, restaurant and bar areas the proposals involved the introduction of suspended lighting rafts requiring capacity checks on the existing roof structures.
