Overview
Enderby Road Infant School in Scunthorpe required the support and advice of a structural engineer to assist them with internal renovation works to the school.
Mason Clark Associates (MCA) were commissioned to undertake the work through the North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) Framework.
Challenges and Solutions
Whilst the renovations were in progress at the school, the project team uncovered a number of steel posts. There was uncertainty as to whether these steel posts were providing intermediate vertical support to the roof structure above. The discovery of the steel posts meant that this area of the building needed a structural engineer to provide advice as to whether or not the removal of an internal glazed partition, together with these steel posts, would cause any structural issues to the existing area of the building.
MCA's Contribution
The site visit entailed undertaking a partial visual internal structural appraisal in one particular area of the school, to assess the format and integrity of the construction and to identify any key structural defects that were present at the time of their inspection.
The detailed report included information about the construction of the building, the inspection itself and recommendations as to whether or not it was safe for the school to go ahead with their planned renovations.
Results
As works were already taking place on site, the council specifically requested a quick response from our engineers.
The council were very pleased with our response time. The report concluded that the partition wall could be removed and the renovation works at the school could be completed.
