Overview

Mason Clark Associates (MCA) were commissioned by Pocklington Town Council through the YorBuild framework to undertake the design and project management services for the Pocklington Arts Centre Refurbishment scheme.

Tasks/Challenges

Mason Clark Associates were commissioned to act as Project Manager, Principal and Lead Designer for the refurbishment of Pocklington Arts Centre. This work was carried out with the aim of increasing accessibility to the building, improving the customer experience and ensuring its long term sustainability. MCA engineers were involved throughout the stages from preliminary design and feasibility to the construction phase.

Activity

The refurbishment scheme involved the internal re-modelling of Oak House, a 17th Century Grade II Listed building, to create a bar and seating area, meeting rooms and improved access facilities. A new lobby, office, meeting room and commercial kitchen were developed as part of the ground floor refurbishment. External works were also carried out to reconfigure the surface water drainage, and the creation of a link building to enclose a flat roof first floor area to the rear of Oak House.

MCA prepared a specification for the building works and procured quotations for any specialist appointments.

For the project management of the construction phase a condition survey was carried out prior to any works commencing, construction drawings and details were prepared and issued, and all the duties of administrating for the NEC 3 main form of contract were fulfilled. Structural engineers attended site at key milestones, particularly when elements of the structure became exposed following demolition.

MCA hosted regular progress meetings and carried out Health and Safety inspections of the site to ensure the minimum requirements of the CDM 2015 regulations were maintained. As built drawings and a health and safety file were prepared upon completion.

Results

The works, which had an overall value in excess of half a million pounds, were brought to a successful completion on time, and with no complications or safety issues.

Very positive feedback was received from Councillor David Sykes, Mayor of Pocklington,

“On behalf of Pocklington Town Council could I record our thanks to your company for all your hard work which has resulted in a real improvement to the town’s facilities.”
