Bridge Control Systems

Mason Clark Associates have extensive experience of designing, installing and commisioning moveable bridge control systems. 

Four of the worlds largest overhead counterweighted bascule bridges are located over the River Hull and Mason Clark associates were a key player in the successful delivery of these schemes.

At the heart of all moveable bridges is a PLC or electronic brain which controls the operation of the bridge and ensures that the bridge is operated safely and reliably.  More recently MCA Project Managed the award winning 5M Dutch River Bridge in Goole.  The swing span is a cable stayed steel structure and carries the A161 over Dutch River which is a tidal navigable waterway.  The bridge is driven with an hydraulic motor and pinion engaged on a toothed rack.  At the centre and at the rear, the bridge is supported on hydraulically driven jacks and wedges.  The bridge is operated from a control building which houses the hydraulic power pack and the PLC cabinets.
Normally the bridge is operated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council staff but the control desk allows maintenance staff to operate the bridge with a lower level of interlocked control.

In addition to the design and installation of new systems, Mason Clark Associates also maintains five moveable bridges for various local authorities.  Mason Clark Associates offer a call out service and over the last 20 years have successfully maintained the bridges and as a result the numbers of breakdowns and call outs have been reduced to a minimum.

At the location of this lifting bridge over the River Hull the river is tidal and navigable. In order to allow shipping to pass the bridge lifts on a regular basis. The road across the bridge is an important route for local traffic.

MCA were commissioned by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council to design a new bridge deck to replace the existing timber sleeper deck. Learn more.
