New Abattoir, Cranswick Country Foods, Preston

Mason Clark Associates have a long history of working at Cranswick Country Foods facility at Preston near Hull and were the perfect choice for Civil and Structural Design Engineers for their proposed new abattoir and lairage.

The �15million facility, built in three phases over four years gives the company a world class facility and allows them to compete in this ever competitive market.

Phase 1 works involved the design of a new access road into the site from the public highway on Staithes Road, extensive areas of hard standing, noise bunds and a storm water storage lagoon to hold excess water discharging from both this and future phases of work.

Phase 2 works consisted of the design of the new lairage, a 15m deep sheet piled cofferdam and further areas of hard standing. The lairage, a 650m2 steel frame structure was designed using our 3D �Building Designer� software with stability provided by a mixture of braced bays and portalised frames due to large loading bays. Foundations were simple concrete pads due to the good nature of the soils on site, however the depth of the cofferdam meant that a localised weak, water-bearing pocket of material close to the bottom of the excavation was struck. Mason Clark Associates were able to quickly adapt the cofferdam design to account for this layer which had not been identified by the site investigation thus preventing delays to the project.

The design of the 2350m2 new abattoir, offices, canteen facilities and freezers was Phase 3 of the works on site. Extensive liaison and design development was required between Mason Clark Associates Structural designers and other members of the project team to ensure that the state of the art production equipment could be safely and correctly supported from the steel frame. Retaining walls to two elevations of the building allowed for lorry loading bays with plant platforms at low and high levels provided to carry all the mechanical and electrical equipment.

Following the success of the above works, Mason Clark Associates have recently been commissioned to undertake the structural design work for the demolition of the original abattoir structure and construction of new chillers.
