Hull & Humber RICS Association

10th February 2012

Hull & Humber RICS Association

Mason Clark’s Associate Building Surveyor, Douglas Jaram, is one of 4 steering group members who are promoting a new Hull and Humber Local RICS association. We have teamed up with local members Simon Delaney, Kevin Marling and Peter Melling to launch the concept of the association.  The group are holding an event at Hull Marina Holiday Inn on 17th February from 12:00pm.

The idea behind the event is firstly to float the idea of the local association amongst the local RICS membership and secondly to encourage networking.  The RICS have held similar successful events within the region at Leeds and Sheffield and this is a first for Hull. The first 50 tickets were a complete sell out so 20 more have been released!  Doug said “The sell out success of the event is due to the energy and enthusiasm of the local membership but also a keen willingness to hold CPD events locally”.  Other professional groups are also involved such as CIOB and ICE but it is hoped others will join in as the process gathers momentum.

The last few places are still available on the following link.  Mason Clark will be in attendance so hopefully see you there.

Marathon Man

Marathon Man

Ian Cook, Director, Mason Clark Associates, will be joining thousands of other runners at the London Marathon on 22 April this year.

Since hanging up his football boots a couple of years ago, Ian has been looking for another challenge.  Now we can think of easier things than running 26 miles in wind/rain/heat, but whatever the weather we know Ian will be there.

Ian has been training hard and we hope he finishes in a good time ... or just finishes which we are sure Ian would be happy with!

Ian is running for a very worthwhile charity, Cancer Research UK, and hoping to raise £2,000 so please dig deep and sponsor Ian for this very worthwhile cause.

Good Luck Ian!

PV Installations - Concerns

PV Installations - Concerns

It appears that the PV Installation industry is unregulated and with design software being available to anyone, there are concerns that some PV companies may be buying design software to have a go at panel design themselves without having any expert advice from Structural Engineers as to whether the roof can actually support extra weight.  Combining this extra weight with snow loads or high winds could be a recipe for disaster.

As the installation of panels is an alteration to the building, it does require assessment which should be carried out under a competent persons scheme.  However, there doesn’t appear to be any regulation as to who can purchase the design software in the first instance and it also appears that it isn’t a requirement that training is necessary to be able to use the software. This therefore comes with a risk to the public should high winds or heavy snow loads cause the panel to slip.
